How to Care for Your Silk
Silk is one of nature’s most luxurious fibres — strong, breathable, and naturally beautiful. With the right care, your Silkloom scarf or shawl will remain as stunning as the day it arrived, for years to come.
Washing
Hand Washing (Recommended)
- Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water (never hot — heat damages silk fibres).
- Add a small amount of gentle, pH-neutral detergent or a specialist silk wash.
- Submerge your scarf and gently swirl it through the water. Do not scrub or wring.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool, clean water until all detergent is removed.
Machine Washing
If you must machine wash, use a delicate or silk cycle with cold water and place your scarf inside a mesh laundry bag. Use a gentle detergent. We still recommend hand washing to preserve the fabric’s lustre and longevity.
Dry Cleaning
Dry cleaning is a safe option for your Silkloom pieces. Inform your dry cleaner that the item is 100% silk.
Drying
- Never tumble dry silk — heat will shrink and damage the fibres.
- Do not wring or twist your scarf to remove water.
- Gently press the scarf between two clean towels to absorb excess moisture.
- Lay flat or hang to dry in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure can fade the colour.
Ironing
- Iron on the lowest heat setting (silk or cool setting).
- Always iron on the reverse side of the fabric.
- Place a clean, damp cloth between the iron and the silk for extra protection.
- Never use steam directly on silk — it can leave water marks.
Storage
- Store your silk scarf folded in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Avoid hanging silk for long periods as it can stretch the fabric.
- Keep away from rough surfaces, jewellery, or anything that could snag the delicate weave.
- Store in a breathable cotton or linen bag — never in plastic, which traps moisture and can cause yellowing.
Stain Removal
Act quickly if a spill occurs. Blot (do not rub) the stain gently with a clean, damp cloth. For stubborn stains, take your piece to a professional dry cleaner as soon as possible. Avoid applying stain removers or bleach directly to silk.
General Tips
- Avoid contact with perfume, hairspray, and deodorant — the alcohol and chemicals can stain or weaken silk fibres. Apply these products before putting on your scarf.
- Silk is naturally resistant to odours and does not need to be washed after every wear.
- If your scarf develops a slight crease from storage, hanging it in a steamy bathroom (not in direct steam) can help relax the fabric.
